يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه بأن الهلع والمعاناة في التراجيديا، أي كل تلك الحالات التي تنحشر في وعي الذات كما يقول هيجل، تشكل طريق التنقية والخلاص والذي يجري في خطاه كل ما كان ينبغي له أن يحدث. ذلك الوعي الذي نستطيع أن نستخلصه لا من خطابات علي وممارساته، بل ومن موقع هذه الشخصية التاريخي المتعدد الجوانب.
فالتاريخ العابر يخلق الشخصية مرة واحدة إلى الأبد والتاريخ العالمي يعيد صياغتها على الدوام. ولهذا فإن علياً يلتمع كالشهاب. فهو لم يذوب في المصير "الإسلامي". انه ليس اينييد فيرجيل وانه في الوقت نفسه لم يعلن الكوفة في صراعه، لأن تكون سيرة العالم كما طالب فرجيلي من روما. فهو لم ير في أهل الكوفة، حتى في أشد حالات اقتراب جماهيرها منه سوى "جبهة الأنصار وسنام العرب".
ولكنه أدرك أن الكوفة ليست سوى تلك الهوة التي تبتلع من يريد ردمها. فقد حذّر من أنه ما أراد بالكوفة "جبار سوءاً إلا ابتلاه الله بشاغل ورماه بقاتل". فالأرض التي أراد الاستناد إليها كانت تمد "مد الأديم العكاظي"، أما الجماهير التي رغب في أن تكون سنده والفعلي، فقد كشفت في وقت لاحق عن أنها "كالمرأة الحامل"، الجماهير التي لم يأتها هو اختيار ولكن جاء إليها شوقاً. ولعل هذه العبارة الوجيزة، التي خاطب بها أهل العراق كفيلة بأن تكشف سر كل التراجيديا السياسية التي وضع تاريخ العرب "الإسلامي" على مسرحها الشخصية البطولية المأساوية المصير. ضمن هذه المقاربة تأتي دراسة هيثم الجنابي في كتابه "علي بن أبي طالب التراجيديا السياسية للطوبادية الثورية". ومنطلق هذه الدراسة أكاديمي، وغايتها التمهيد لإجراء تقييم علمي متوازن لهذه الشخصية الخطيرة.
