يضم الكتاب نشاط مهرجان المربد الشعري السادس الذي التأم شمله في بغداد من 26/11/1985-1/12/1985. وقد أريد لهذا المهرجان أن يكون مهرجاناً لكل شعراء العروبة فدعي لحضوره شعراء من جميع الأقطار العربية، وقد لبّى الدعوة أكثر من 350 أديباً وشاعراً وناقداً، كما اشتضافت بغداد أسماء لامعة في سماء الشعر العالمي من الاتحاد السوفييتي وفرنسا وإسبانيا والمملكة المتحدة وأستراليا واليابان وغيرها من البلدان الشرقية والغربية. وقد قدم الضيوف ما أرادوا تقديمه فكان هذا المهرجان كما أريد له في أن يتسم بسمة المربد القديم، حيث نشد هؤلاء جميعاً في المربد ما يعبر عن رأيه، فكان نتاج ذلك عطاءات تعددت اتجاهاتها الفنية فكانت بين كلاسيكية وحديثية، وتجارب شعرية تنوعت صيغها وأساليبها وموضوعاتها وأوزانها وقوافيها، بالإضافة إلى ما عبر به الناطقون بغير اللغة العربية الذين ارتقوا منبر المربد السادس، ليسمعوا الحاضرين غناءهم وموسيقاهم.
وقد جمع حصاد هذا المربد في هذا الكتاب مع مراعاة التسلسل الأبجدي لبداية أسماء الشعراء بالإضافة إلى ذلك تمّ إدراج الكلمتين اللتين افتتح بهما المهرجان وهما: كلمة ابنة شهيد العراق، وكلمة الوفود الشقيقة والصديقة التي ألقاها الشاعر نزار قباني في بداية الشعر ثم في ختام الكتاب تمّ إدراج كلمة وزير الثقافة والإعلام في ذلك الوقت. هذا وبالرغم من أن ما في هذا الكتاب لا يشمل كل ما قيل في المربد السادس من شعر... إلا أن بعض ما فيه لم يلق في المهرجان، وإنما تمّ استلهامه من أيام المهرجان ونشر في صحيفة المهرجان، فأرتي ضمه إلى شعر المناسبة.
