في هذا الكتاب مجموع كتابات أو مقالات لا مسَد مؤلفها جرح العراقيين وتحسس نبضهم، فكان الدافع لإعداد هذا الكتاب ينطلق من أمرين رئيسين: أولهما ما شهده العراق في العقدين الأخيرين، وبعد العام 2003 بشكل خاص، من هجرة إلى خارج. حدود الوطن، مع ملاحظة أن عدداً كبيراً من الفنانين والأدباء والمثقفين كانوا ضمن المهاجرين وقد جاءت هجرات هؤلاء الأدباء والفنانين مقرونة عادة بتعبيرات التغني بالوطن والتعلق به، الأمر الثاني أن الكاتب وجد تحت سقف هذه الهجرة، تنامي مبالغات أفراد، ولا سيما السياسيين والكثير من المثقفين، في تكرار وتغن بمفاهيم ومبادئ معينة يكونون غالباً غير مطبقيها ولا متمثلَيها عملياً، مثل التشدق بالديمقراطية، والكلام في حقوق الإنسان، والمبالغة في التعبير في جب الوطن... الخ. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب الذي تناول فيه الدكتور نجم عبد الله كاظم "كبار المبدعين العراقيين... بشيء من القسوة، بعض هؤلاء فإننا لا نعني أبداً المس بفنية إبداعاتهم، مثل سعدي يوسف، وفاضل العزاوي، وكاظم الساهر، ومظفر النواب، وبرهان الخطيب، وسميرة المانع.. وهم جميعاً رموز كبيرة ومحط تقدير واحترام الجميع. لكننا تعتقد أيضاً أن الكثير من هؤلاء المثقفين الكبار شاركوا، وإن بدرجة معينة ومن حيث يعرفون أو لا يعرفون، في عملية الحزاب التي يعيشها العراق اليوم(...) وإننا نركز في هذا، على المرحلة الممتدة من سقوط بغداد واحتلال العراق في عام 2003، وزوال شماعة (النظام السابق) (...) إلى نهاية العام 2006 حين ساءت أوضاع الوطن (...) نتذكر أننا كما نسمع أيام الصبا والشباب بمرض (الحنين إلى الوطن/ هومسيك homsick، بل الكثير منا عاشه وجربه عملياً وربما لا يزال. ولكن مع أن الكثير من المبدعين الذين تتناولهم فصول كتابنا هم من مبدعي الخارج العراقيين، فإن من الغريب أن لا نجد هناك إلا القليل جداً منهم أصيب بهذا المرض حقيقة، وليس إبداعاً وكلاماً، والكلام للكاتب.
