في القرآن الكريم؛ استهل الله تعالى عدداً من السور بأحرف مقطعة (الم، الر، المص...). وقد تعددت آراء المفسرين بشأنها، ولم يتفقوا على نهج واضح لتحديد دلالالتها. وفي هذا الكتاب نحا المؤلف في تفسير ذلك إلى نهج مبتكر سماه (فن الاختزال في القرآن الكريم) وذلك لفهم معاني هذه الأحرف. وقد حاول فيه تنبيه الأذهان إلى أنه كان لدى العرب قبل الإسلام فنّ الاختزال الذي له قواعده وأصوله لدى شعراء الجاهلية خاصة، ورأى أن الله عز وجل قد تحدّى العرب بالقرآن لغة ومضموناً كما تحدّاهم في فن الاختزال، وذهب إلى أن الأحرف التي استهل بها الله، عزّ وجل، بعض السور القرآنية، ليست سوى أحرف خضعت لقواعد فن الاختزال اللغوي الجاهلي ولنهجه، وأن لكل حرف دلالته.
طرح المؤلف رأيه هذا نظرياً بأسلوب علمي، ثم طبّق نظريته على جميع أحرف المقطعات في جميع السور القرآنية بأسلوب علمي أيضاً، وبهذا النهج للتأويل والتفسير أمكنه تأويل جميع الأحرف المقطعة، أو أحرف الاختزال، تأويلاً جديداً أصيلاً لم يسبقه إليه أحد. وترك المؤلف للعلماء والمفكرين أمر الفصل في قيمة الكتاب العلمية.
