تنتصب الدارة على قمة تل من شرفتها الواقعة في الواجهة يمتد أمامك منظر رائع لمدينة فلورنسا؛ خلفها توجد حديقة قديمة، بأزهار قليلة، لكن بأشجار جميلة، تحيط بها أسيجة من صناديق مكسورة، تجري عبرها ممرات عشبية وينتصب فيها كهف صناعي يتساقط فيه ماء على شكل شلالات تصدر صوتاً فضياً شجياً من حلية معمارية قرنية الشكل. بنى الدارة نبيل فلورنسي في القرن السادس عشر، وباعها أحفاده الذين أفقرهم الدهر إلى اسرة إنجليزية، وهذه الأسرة هي التي أعارتها إلى ما يري بانتون لفترة من الزمن. مع أن غرف الدارة كانت فسيحة وعالية، إلا أن الدارة نفسها لم تكن كبيرة الحجم فتمكنت ما يري من إدارتها جيداً جداً بمساعدة ثلاثة خدم تركتهم الأسرة الإنجليزية لخدمتها.
بعد موت زوجها المأساوي فبل سنة، وبعد أشهر قلق حين كان يتوجب عليها أن تظل تحت الطلب دائماً في حال ما إذا أراد أن يراها المحامون الذين كانوا يجمعون ما خلَف زوجها من ثروته المبدَدة، سرَها قبوا عرض أسرة ليونارد لهذا البيت العتيق العتيد حتى تتمكن من إراحة أعصابها والتفكير بما يجب فعله بحياتها. بعد ثماني سنوات من حياة مسرفة، وزواج غير سعيد، وجدت نفسها في الثلاثين وكل ما لديها بعض الللآلئ الجميلة ودخل كاف، مع إقتصام صارم، لإعالتها... إلى أن أقدم "روالي" الشاب الإنجليزي المستهتر، على مساعدتها في التخلص من قضية كانت أودت بها إلى السجن، فهل ستقع في شباك هذا الشاب المخادع الذي لا يمكن الثقة به؟؟
