يحتل هم الشعر، ووظيفة الشاعر في هذا الديوان حيزاً؛ فالشاعر منشغل بهذين الهمّين جاداً في معالجتهما مرة، وساخراً بهما معاً مرة، ويمكن للناظر في هذا الديوان أن يلحظ ذلك في تقسيم الديوان نفسه؛ فهو يبدأ بقصيدته: "اغتراب الشاعر وشقاء القصيدة" وينتهي بقصيدة: "الشعر والشعراء". ويبدو أن موقفه من الشعر والشاعر معاً ينطلق من أزمة نفسية حيناً، وإن شئت فمن إحباط، وينطلق حيناً آخر من ثقافة فلسفية أدبية بما يقرؤه لهذا الناقد أو ذلك الشاعر من رأي.
ومن هنا لم يكن غريباً على شاعرنا أن ينشغل مدة طويلة بترجمة مختارات من شعر الشاعر البولندي الكبير روزيفتش الذي أعلن في ستينيات هذا القرن موت الشعر.
ولكن يكون من الظلم الفادح أن نبني لقصائد هاتف الجنابي مثل هذا السياج من الهموم أو الموضوعات؛ لا نسمح لها بالخروج عنه؛ فالحق أنه يكتب في كل ما يسنح له...
