طوال نحو 25 عاما من الكتابة ظل عبد الجواد مخلصا للتراث العربي الشفاهي حيث استلهم روح الحكايات الشعبية في نسيج معاصر منذ مجموعته القصصية الأولى (حكايات الديب رماح) في نهاية الثمانينيات وبعدها أصدر مجموعات قصصية وروايات منها (كتاب التوهمات) و(حرب أطاليا) و(العاشق والمعشوق) و(كيد النساء) و(يومية هروب) وحظي باهتمام نقاد مصريين وعرب منهم إدوار الخراط وحامد أبو أحمد وجورج جحا.
وإضافة إلى القصة والرواية كان عبد الجواد مهتما بتحقيق السير الشعبية وتصدر له في معرض القاهرة للكتاب الذي افتتح اليوم سيرة شعبية مجهولة للفيلسوف الطبيب ابن سينا وسيرة شعبية للظاهر بيبرس في أربعة مجلدات.

بخيط رفيع لا ينقطع ولا تخطئة العين.. تترابط الأزمان في مجموعة "خيري عبد الجواد" القصصية. فنجد الثورة وعصر الانفتاح والنعجة دوللي وثورة القرن الواحد وعشرين التكنولوجية تعيش جنبا إلى جنب في سطور القصة الواحدة، لا نشعر بالإزدحام أو عدم التناغم، نجدها دائما مرتبطة بأحداث القصة وشخصيتها دون افتعال.. مرسمومة بلغة سلسلة تترفرق فيها الجمل كالماء والجدول بلا انقطاع وبلا ضجيج، ولا ننسى الحس الفكاهي الذي نستشعره في المواقف والكلمات. نرى شخصيات انسب ما يقال عنها انها "عادية" ولكن في حوارها الداخلي هناك شئ غير عادي يستدعي الكتابة عنها. قد نجدها تعيش في أفكارها إلى جانب زوجة لا تشغر بشئ ولا تفعل سوى التأفف.. أو خلف المكتب في محاولة فاشلة للكتابة ، وجميعها نجده قريبا من الواقع " العامي" ، بعيدا عن الطبقة العليا في المجتمع نجدها في "صفط اللبن" مع السيد "دعبس" أو مع عيشة تقطن فوق احد الاسطح هربا من لهيب شمس يوليو الحارقة.
