بدأ بتنظيم المعرفة يأخذ طابع الجد ويتلمس سبيل الاستقامة منذ زمن أفلاطون إذ قسم العلم إلى قسمين: محسوس، ومعقول. وقد اهتم الفلاسفة الذين جاءوا بعده بتصنيف المعرفة، حتى إذا ما جاء العصر الوسيط صنف العلماء المعرفة إلى علوم دينية ودنيوية وقسموا العلوم الدينية إلى سبعة أقسام والعلوم الدنيوية إلى سبعة أقسام. أما المسلمون فإن التصنيف عند علمائهم قد تأثر أول آمره بفلسفة اليونان، ثم انتهى بهم الأمر إلى ابتداع تقسيمات خاصة بهم لترتيب العلوم والمعارف. ومن بين العلماء المسلمين الذين عنوا بترتيب العلوم وتصنيفها، مؤلف هذا الكتاب "محمد بن أبي بكر المرعشي" المعروف بساجعكي زادة.
ويعد كتابه استكمالاً لما ساهم به علماء المسلمين في مجالات تصنيف العلوم وترتيبها. وللمؤلف مداخل متعددة في هذا الكتاب لترتيب المعرفة فهو يقسمها إلى ثلاثة أصناف: علوم نافعة كالعربية والشرعية، علوم ضارة كالفلسفة والسحر وعلوم لا ينفع علمها ولا يضر جهلها كالشعر والأنساب ثم يقسمها من حيث الحكم الشرعي، وتظهر خطته في ترتيب العلوم حيث يبدأ باللغة العربية ثم ينتقل إلى العلوم المأخوذة من الكتاب والسنة، فيفرد لعلوم القرآن باباً خاصاً ويعقبها بعلوم الحديث، ثم يشير في موضع آخر إلى أهمية العلوم، كما يتناول موضوع الإجازات التي تمنح للطلاب، كما يتناول الأحكام الشرعية لتعلم مختلف فنون المعرفة، فيجمع جميع الأحكام لا يترك واردة ولا شاردة إلا استقصاها ناقلاً آراء من قله مستشهداً بما يراه يصلح للاستشهاد.
وأصل الكتاب أربعة نسخ واحدة منها أصلية، مجهولة الناسخ والتاريخ وقد قام المحقق بجمع النسخ وتوثيق نسبة الكتاب إلى مؤلفه، مع ضبط العنوان وضبط اسم المؤلف، وقارن النسخ ببعضها، كما تتبع الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية وردها إلى مصدرها. واستقصى معظم النصوص التي يشتهد بها المؤلف وينقلها عن أصحابها، كما وضع تعرفاً لكل كتاب استقى المؤلف منه استشهاداً من استشهاداته وأثبت مصادر نقوله لهذه التعريفات حسب المتبع...
