ذاع كتاب الأمثال لأبي عبيد الهروي في الآفاق ذيوعاً عظيماً عند أهل المشرق، وقد اشتغل العلماء في الأقطار العربيّة والإسلاميّة به، خصوصاً في المغرب الأقصى والأندلس، فكانوا يقرؤونه في دروسهم ويعلّقون عليه تعليقات يكتبها تلاميذهم في حواشي نسخهم؛ ومن أهم الشروح التي ظهرت لهذا الكتاب، شرح أبي عبيد البكري الأندلسي المعروف بكتاب: "فصل المقال في شرح كتاب الأمثال"، وقد درس البكري كتاب الأمثال لأبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام الهروي، أثناء إقامته في قرطبة بين عام (443هـ/ 1051م وعام 456هـ/ 1064م) وعمل على شرحه واختصاره.
ويعد شرح البكري لكتاب أبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام الهروي في كتابه الموسوم بعنوان: "فصل المقال في شرح كتاب الأمثال"، هو أكثر من جمع بارع للتعليقات التي كانت موجودة قبل عصر البكري على حواشي النسخ المتداولة من كتاب الأمثال لأبي عبيد، لأنَّ البكري جعل فيه جهداً قيماً وعظيماً، حتى بدا فيه مستقلاً ومتميزاً عن السابقين.
فقد جمع تلك التعليقات القديمة الهامة، التي كان قد كتبها علماء مرموقون، بما احتوت عليه من شروح نحوية ولغوية وتاريخية تتصل بفصل المقال، وذلك في كُلِّ متكامل سهل القراءة، وكذلك نسب الأبيات غير المعزوّة لأصحابها، ملتمساً فوائد عظيمة من كتاب الأمالي للقالي.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب عمد الدكتور قصي الحسين على تحقيقه وعمل على شرحه وأضاف له مقدمة وافية وألحق بالكتاب فهارس متنوعة.
