يتناول هذا الكتاب معنى الديمقراطية الحقيقية والمساواة الفعلية والعلاقة بينهما. وهي شروط تكاد تكون غائبة كلياً عن مجتمعاتنا بحكم الظروف التي نعيش. فنحن منشغلون أو متشاغلون، في العراق وفلسطين ولبنان، بأوضاع متفجرة تتصل بالسيادة والاحتلال وغير ذلك من أمور جسام تغطي على المشهد الفكري والسياسي.
يحاول كيسلاسي، وهو الأكاديمي في جامعات فرنسا، أن يشرح للتلاميذ والطلاب، وحتى للأساتذة ولكل من يهتم بما يدور حوله في مجتمعه، كيف تقرأ أحداث المجتمع الديمقراطي لفهم تداعياتها وآثارها.
يقدم المؤلف تحليلاً سوسيولوجياً أعد بمهارة اختصاصي استند إلى فكر أستاذه، مفكر القرن التاسع عشر ومنظر اليدمقراطية، أليكسي دو توكفيل وإلى أفكاره الأساسية. توكفيل الذي يحدد الديمقراطية لا كنظام سياسي فحسب، بل كـ"واقه اجتماعي" يحدد العلاقات الاجتماعية بين المواطنين، بهدف الوصول إلى نوع من المساواة، هي "المساواة في الشروط"، وهي تختلف عن المساواة في الحق التي توقف عندها فلاسفة عصر الأنوار، والتي تقرن المساواة السياسية بالمساواة في الاعتبارات والمساواة في الفرص، وأيضاً هي المعيار الاجتماعي الذي يجعل مواطني الأزمنة الديمقراطية متساويين ومتشابهين.
اعتمد الكاتب منهجاً أكاديمياً علمياً نجح فيه بتوضيح أكثر المسائل تعقيداً، وقد كسب المؤلف الرهان، فالكتاب، كما سيلاحظ القارئ، سلسل وواضح، لذا ننصح بقراءته بعمق حتى ولو بدت الأفكار بعيدة عن مجتمعاتنا، لأننا، بعد التمحيص، نجد أنها تنطبق علينا بشكل ما.
