إنَّ كتاب "الشِّفا بتعريف حقوق المصطفى" يعد أوسعُ كتاب يبحث في الشمائل المحمدية، والخصال المُصْطَفويَّةِ، بل هو أجلُّ مُصنَّفِ يبحث في شَرَف المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم وقدره العظيم، ومنصبه الرفيع.
ولعل هذا ما حدا بالمستشرق لويس ماسنيون أن يقول: "يكفي لتعرف أوربة محاسن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومحامدهُ، أن ينقل كتاب "الشفا" إلى إحدى اللغات الأوروبية"؛ وقد اعتنى عُلماءُ الأمةِ ومُحدِّثوها عنايةً خاصة بالشفا، فكثرتْ شروحاتُهُ، وتعددت مختصراتُهُ، وتنوعت الكتب المؤلفة في تخريج أحاديثه، منها هذا الكتابُ: "روض الخمائل على الشمائل" وهو ضربٌ من خدمة "الشفا" والعناية به.
جمع المؤلف فيه ما رواه القاضي عياض بسنده مرفوعاً إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقد بلغ مجموع ما أسنده القاضي عياض في الشفا (83) حديثاً مرفوعاً، أو موقوفاً، أو مقطوعاً، المرفوعُ منها يزيد عن (74) حديثاً، والباقي موقوفات ومقطوعات.
وقد سلك في تصنيف هذا الكتاب وإعداده منهجاً ما يلي: أولاً: رتب الأحاديث والآثار المسندة بحسب وقوعها في الشفا، ثانياً: اختار لكل حديث عنواناً يناسبه، ثالثاً: خرج الآيات القرآنية بذكر اسم السورة ورقم الآية، رابعاً: خرج الأحاديث والآثار، خامساً: عرف بإختصار شديد ببعض رجال السند، سادساً: قام بتفسير وبيان مفردات الحديث، وشرح غريبه، وبيان معانيه، معتمداً على أُمَّات المصادر، سابعاً: ذكر ما يرشد إليه الحديثُ، وما يستفادُ منهُ من أحكام، ثامناً: صنع فهارس فنية لهذا الكتاب.
