"أدب الكاتب" كتاب ألفه ابن قتيبة للوزير العباسي بن خاقان. وكان من أسباب تأليفه لهذا الكتاب أنه رأى: "أكثر أهل زمانه هذا عن سبيل الأدب ناكبين، ومن اسمه متطيرين، ولأهله كارهين: أما الناشئ منهم فراغب عن التعليم، والشادي تارك للازدياد، والتأدب في عنفوان الشباب ناس أو متناس...". ولما كان هذا شأن الناس عمل ابن قتيبة "كتباً خفافاً في المعرفة وفي تقويم اللسان واليد، يشتمل كل كتاب منها على فن...".
وكتاب أدب الكاتب مرآة تعكس شخصية ابن قتيبة، فهو أديب رفيع الذوق، ذو ثقافة واسعة، تجد في كتابه الأدب والتاريخ والنحو والصرف واللغة. وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، حيث عنى المحقق به، لما فيه من تصحيف وتحريف، ونقص وزيادة، فراجعه وقابل نصوصه على عدة نسخ، وقد اتخذ بطبعة بريل (في مدينة ليدن) أصلاً.
