كتاب (الجراثيم) هذا يمثل مرحلة متقدمة في التصنيف والتبويب والمحتوى بين معاجم المعاني أو كتب الصفات المتطورة - شكلاً ومضموناً - عما سبق، سواء أصحت نسبة هذا الكتاب إلى ابن قتيبة الدينوري أم لم تصلح فإن ما يعنينا منه في المرتبة الأولى أنه ينطوي على مادة علمية غزيرة ومتنوعة تفوق ما انطوى عليه كتاب (الغريب المصنف) لأبي عبيد، مع الإشارة إلى أن مؤلف (الجراثيم) اعتمد اعتماداً واضحاً على ما في (الغريب المصنف)، وأفاد منه ومن غيره بحيث توفرت له حصيلة لغوية غنية تجعله جديدراً بأن يخرج إلى النور، خدمة له وللعربية وتراثها، وخدمة التراث أمانة في أعناق أبنائه، ورسالة ينبغي أن تبلغ إليهم، ومهمة ينبغي الحرص على إنجازها في الحدود المقبولة، واستجابة لذلك فكر الأخ الأستاذ محمد الحميدي أن يسهم في خدمة تراثنا العريق بانجاز تحقيق هذا الكتاب، ولقد صبر على حل مشكلاته، وتأنى في تحري الحقيقة، وحاول أن تكون الأمانة العلمية بغيته الخالصة.
