لكل أمة لغتها التي تعتزّ بها وهي جزء من حضارتها وتراثها، والخط دليلها الناطق بها وأداة اتصالها المرتبط ارتباطاً وثيقاً بنقل أفكارها، والتعبير عن هذه الأفكار التي تدور في عقول أبنائها وإيصالها إلى الآخرين. وقد قيل: عندما اخترع الإنسان صورة الحرف ولدت الكتابة ثم الحضارة. وللكتابة العربية وحروفها ميزة جمالية تجلّت فيها تلك العبقرية وتلك اليد القوية المرنة، وليس هناك أية أمة من الأمم تداولت الكتابة بالشكل الذي تداوله العرب المسلمون، فجعلوا من الكتابة فناً قائماً بذاته. لذا يمكن القول بأن الخط العربي هو أهم ما نفخر به من بين فنوننا الإسلامية المتبقية والذي ساير كل المراحل التي مرّ بها، والذي بالاستطاعة اعتباره فناً حيّاً، تطور مع الزمن واكتسب شكلاً ثابتاً. ومن أجل الحفاظ على الصورة الحقيقية للحرف العربي وبعض لوحات كبار خطاطيه الذين يشار إليهم بالبنان، تم إعداد هذا الأطلس، الذي يحوي خطوط جمهرة من الخطاطين الذين كانت لهم مساهماتهم في ضبط قواعده، من حيث مراعاتهم لأصوله وآدابه.. بالإضافة إلى نتاجات من جاء بعدهم من التلامذة.. مع تقديم تراجم مختصرة وموجزة لهم. هذا وأن العبقري في الخط العربي هو من ألمّ بأسرار الحرف وصورته الفنية ذات الطابع الكلاسيكي، مما يتيح له التمتّع بجبال التشكيلات الخطية، وتعاشق الحروف فيما بينها، إضافة إلى آثاره الخطية التي رفد بها حركة الخط العربي محافظاً في الوقت نفسه على صورة الحرف.. وهو في تعامله معه كأنه كائن حي. أما الهدف من تقديم نفائس الخط العربي فهو التعريف بتاريخ هذا الفن الراقي فن الخط العربي والتعريف بآدابه وبإبداعاته.
