يعتبر الخط العربي الفن الإسلامي الأول، وهو في جميع صوره يعتبر من أعظم الفنون التي بنيت عليها حضارات الأمم، إذ له طابع خاص يميزه عن غيره. وقد أجمع المتخصصون بالفنون والكتاب على أن الخط العربي كم قائم بذاته لم ينل عند أمة من الأمم ما ناله عند العرب والمسلمين من العناية والتفنن فيه، واتخذوه أولاً وسيلة للمعرفة ونقل الأفكار، ثم ألبسوه لباساً قدسياً عندما جعلوه مجوّاً جميلاً جديراً بكتابة القرآن الكريم، ثم أصبح فناً يزين الكتب والدواوين وجدران وسقوف المساجد والقصور.
وقد تنوعت أشكال الخط العربي حسب اجتهادات وابتكارات كبار الخطاطين المسلمين، كابن مقلة، وابن البواب، وغيرهم هؤلاء رسخوا الخط العربي بأنواعه وأشكاله، وجعلوا له جمالية مستقلة، تعمقوا بأسرارها وفلسفتها، فكانت له قواعد وأسس ورسائل. ولقد عانى الطلاب في المراحل التعليمية المختلفة من رداءة خطهم وبشاعته أحياناً، وهذا يعود وبالدرجة الأولى إلى تهاون المدارس في تعليم فنّ الخط العربي، سواء في عدم استعانتها بمعلمين اختصاصيين في تعليم الخط، أو في إلغاء علامة الخط، أو في إلغاء أو تقليل الحصص التعليمية المخصصة لتدريس الخط.
