العوامية مدينة عريقة تاريخها موغل في القدم؛ وبالرغم من أنها لا تعتبر من المواقع الأثرية المعروفة والمتناثرة في شتى أنحاء المنطقة الشرقية، إلا أنه يسود الاعتقاد لدى الكثيرين بأن العوامية ترقد على كنوز من الآثار النفسية تعود إلى عصور تاريخية مختلفة. وهذا يعزز الاعتقاد بأن لهذه المدينة عراقة وجذور تاريخية وحضارية قديمة تعود إلى مدينة الزراه ذات الشهرة الفائقة في التاريخ الإسلامى وقبله.
ونظراً لما لهذه المدينة من أهمية تاريخية عنى المؤلف "زكي الصالح" بإبراز ما جهل من تاريخها وتدوين ما اندثر من تراثها، وذلك عبر إبرازها لأحيائها، مرافقها، العُمد فيها، مساجدها وحسينياتها، كتاتيبها، خصائص لهجة أبنائها، أمثالها الشعبية، أهازيج أطفالها الشعبية، الجن ومعتقدات أبنائها الخرافية، طبها الشعبي، عاداتها وتقاليدها... أهم رجالاتها، أهم زراعتها.
فهذه المدينة ورغم عراقتها لم تحظ كغيرها من مدن وقرى القطيف بدراسات وأبحاث خاصة رغم ما لها من مكانة تاريخية واجتماعية متميزة. هذا وقد تضمن الكتاب العديد من الصور الفوتوغرافية الملونة التي تبرز أهم معالم هذه المدينة، ومراكزها التراثية القديمة.
