قد يتوهم القراء بعد مطالعتهم هذا الكتاب ووقوفهم على ما فيه من مكايد الحب الغريبة المدهشة أنه كغيره من قصص العشق والغرام التي يطالعونها في هذه الأيام.
فقد لا يخفى أن قصص العشق والغرام - المترجمة والمؤلفة - مبنية في الغالب على حوادث وهمية تخترعها مخيلة الكاتب فينسج لها على نول التصور الثوب اللائق بها ثم يزيد عليه بالتحشية والتذييل ما تمس الحاجة إليه من إيضاح وتفصيل أو يضيف إليه ما يقتضيه المقام من شرح وتعليق وتوشية وتنميق حتى يجيء نسيج قصته طبق مراده من حيث أحكام السدى وإتقان اللحمة ويقع سرد حوادثها وإنتساق تفاصيلها أحسن وقع في نفوس القراء.
أما مشتملات هذا الكتاب فليست من جنس الحكايات المصنوعة التي لا حقيقة لها على الإطلاق ولا من نوع القصص الموضوعة ولها شبه ظل الحقيقة التاريخية بل هي حوادث حب وغرام حقيقية جرت في قصور ملوك أوروبا وقياصرتها في أوقات مختلفة، وقد تخللها من نصب الحبائل والمصايد وتدبير الخدائع والمكايد وإقتراف المآثم والمحارم وتجرع غصص الكوارث والفواجع ما يدهش العقول ويحير الأفكار وتقشعر لشدة هو له الأبدان، وهي كلها منقولة عن شهود ثقات رأوها بعيونهم وسمعوها بآذانهم ودونوها في تواريخهم.
وأما الغرض من ترجمتها هو الإعتبار بما فيها من الأمور المخالفة لما يعهده الناس في قصور الملوك والمغايرة لكل ما هو عادل وحق وشريف وطاهر وسار وحسن، وفي ذلك عظات كثيرة بالغة.
