وجاء هذا الكتاب مبوباً في ست فصول: يتضمن الفصل الأول مقدمة منهجية عامة عن التغير والتحديث الحضاري، وتعرض الفصل الثاني لدراسة التغيير والتحديث الحضاري وتحليل عناصره ومعالمه، وخصص الفصل الثالث لعرض أدبيات التحديث الحضاري والتغيير في الدول المتقدمة التي تتميز ببروز ظاهرة التحديث في مجتمعاتها، وإعتمادها على معطيات التقدم العلمي والتكنولوجي.
وتناول الفصل الرابع أدبيات التحديث الحضاري والتغيير في الدول النامية التي تعاني كثيراً من المشكلات المتداخلة في شتى المجالات الإقتصادية والإجتماعية والثقافية، أما الفصل الخامس فقد خصص لعرض عشرة نماذج وإستراتيجيات مختارة للتغيير والتحديث الحضاري في الدول المتقدمة مثل الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ودول غرب أوروبا، بإعتبارها البلدان الأكثر تطوراً.
ويعرض الفصل الأخير من هذا الكتاب إحدى عشر من النماذج والإستراتيجيات البارزة للتغيير والتحديث الحضاري في الدول النامية، والتي عكست إتجاهات عديدة ترواحت بين تطبيق هذه المجتمعات نماذج تحديثية ثبت نجاحها في المجتمعات المتقدمة، أو بناء نماذج خاصة بها تتلائم وظروفها إقتصادية والسياسية والإجتماعية والثقافية وتلبي مطالبها الملحة، وذلك بصعوبة إقتباس نماذج تحديثية جاهزة من المجتمعات المتقدمة.
