إذا كانت بعض مقاييس الجمال تختلف من بيئة إلى أخرى، ومن زمن إلى زمن آخر، فإنّ معظم هذه المقاييس يبقى هو هو على توالي العصور، وبإختلاف الشعوب والبيئات.
فَمَن من الناس لم يحب الخدّ الأسيل، والعين النجلاء، والشفة السمراء، والثغر الباسم، والعنق الطويل، والنهد الناهد، والقامة الممشوقة، والحديث الناعم، و... و...
إنّ العرب، منذ الجاهليّة حتى اليوم، رسموا امرأة واحدة للْجمال الأنثويّ المثاليّ، ولم تختلف أوصاف هذه المرأة عند جميع الشعراء إلاّ في تفاصيل صغيرة.
فقد صوَّر الشاعر الجاهليّ حبيبته بدينَةً سمينة، ضخمة الأوراك، عظيمة العجز، وذلك لتأثّره بالقِيَم الجاهليّة التي كانت سائدة في عصره، فبدانة المرأة دليل على تَرَفها، وغِناها و"أرستقراطيّتها" وهذا، بدوره، دليل على أنّ الشاعر فارس شجاع استطاع الوصول إلى بنات الطبقة المُمَيَّزَة في عصره.
يعرض هذا الكتاب نماذج شعريّة، أو لوحات فنّيّة رسمها الشعراء عن جمال حبيباتهم، وقد قسَّم الكتاب إلى فصول وزّعها المؤلف بحسب مواطن الجمال في الحبيبة من شَعْر، وخَدّ، وعين، وشفة، وعنق، وصدر... ثم رتب هذه الفصول ترتيباً ألفبائياً.
