يتناول المؤلف على صفحات هذا الكتاب، المجتمع العربي في الجاهلية مركزاً اهتمامه على دراسة أوضاع البدو وما نشأ عنها من معقتدات وعادات ونمط عيشي وعلاقات اجتماعية مرتبطة بمفهوم العصبة ومقوماتها عند العربي وتفرعاتها وخلفياتها بما فيها من غلبة وسلطان وقهر، وما نتج عنها من صراعات قبلية كما رأى أن مراتبية الوحدات العصبية التي تقوم أصلاً على ما سماه ايديولوجية المجتمع الأبوي، بدءاً بالأب والابن والعم أدت إلى إهمال كبير لدور المرأة التي فقدت حرية الاختيار كما أن هذه العصبية القبلية هي التي حددت قواعد السلوك الفردي والاجتماعي على حد سواء.
ويعرض المؤلف لقيام الدولة الإسلامية العربية الأول وإبراز خصائصها ونظرة العربي إليها. إلى جانب كل ذلك فالكتاب مليء الشواهد من الشعر الجاهلي والأحاديث النبوية ومن كبريات المعاجم والمراجع التراثية.
