في هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا خصصها المؤلف لشعر اللهو والخمر وذلك في محاولة منه لتتبع تاريخ هذا النوع من الشعر والذي نطقت به ألسن مجموعة من الشعراء القدامى، عرف عنهم التخصص بهذا النوع من الشعر الذي حاكى الخمرة والكأس.
في بداية الدراسة تحدث المؤلف عن شعر اللهو والخمر في العصر الجاهلي، وبعد ذلك انتقل للعهد الراشدي مبيناً عداء الشريعة الإسلامية لهذا النوع من الشعر وتحريمها له، ومن ثم تحدث عن إسراف الخلفاء الأمويين بشرب الخمر وعن تشجيعهم لشعراء الخمر واللهو، أما العصر العباسي والأندلس فتشكل المحطة الرابعة لهذه الدراسة وفيها تم استعراض أهم شعراء الخمر الذين ظهروا في هذين العصرين أما المحطة التالية فخصصها لتقديم ترجمة وافية لمجموعة من الشعراء الذين نبغوا في هذا النوع من الشعر أمثال الأعسنى الأكبر والأخطل، وأبو النواس، وفي هذه المحطة تم التركيز على خصائص هذا النوع من الشعر عند كل منهم، وموقفهم من هذا الشعر، وعلاقاتهم بالخمرة، ومدى نبوغهم فيه، كما وعرض بعض المقطوعات الشعرية التي جاءت بها قرائح هؤلاء الشعراء.
