ظلت "نوادر اللغة" اللحياني، مصدراً هاماً من المصادر التي اتكأ عليها علماء اللغة ومؤلفون مختلف الموضوعات فيها وصنّاع معاجمها حتى زمن قريب.
فقد كانت "نوادر اللحياني" من أهم المصنفات التي اعتمدها أبو منصور الأزهري وابن سيده الأندلسي وأبو علي القالي وغيرهم من أساطين العربية وأعلامها المشهورين في تأليف معاجمهم ووضع مصنفاتهم التي ما زالت حتى يومنا هذا صُوىً مرفوعة على دروب العربية في مفازاتها الموحشة.
ولما لم نتمكن من العثور على نسخة خطية من هذه النوادر في أي خزانة من خزائن حفظ المخطوطات في الشرق والغرب قمنا بتتبع ما حفظه لنا العلماء من هذه النوادر والمرويات عن صاحبها في المصنفات المختلفة التي تزخر بها المكتبة العربية بين مطبوع ومخطوط، ثم قمنا بمعالجة هذا المنقول عن اللحياني وصنعنا منه مصنفاً لغوياً نعتقد أنه بشكله الذي نقدمه عليه اليوم صار قريباً أو كالقريب من الشكل الذي تركه عليه صاحبه.
وقد خدمنا ما وقفنا عليه من نوادر اللحياني والمأثور عنه بصنع الأقاليد اللازمة التي تمكن من يريد والوصول إلى ما يريد الوصول إليه بيسر وسهولة، كما قمنا بتعريف صاحب النوادر تعريفاً يكشف عن كثير من الجوانب الغامضة في حياته.
هذه "النوادر" أنها الوحيدة المنسوبة إلى صاحبها في المكتبة العربية، وأن الحديث عنها وعن صاحبها وجهوده اللغوية، هو الأوفى فيما نعتقد، ونحن إذ نقدم هذه المجموعة اللغوية من نوادر اللحياني والمأثور عنه، نأمل أن تكون قد قدمنا لعشاق العربية وتراثها شيئاً ذا قيمة.
