دارات العرب في بلادهم وما اتصل بها من أخبار، من الموضوعات التي حظيت بعناية بعض علماء العربية من اللغويين والجغرافيين القدماء منذ بدايات التأليف في علوم العربية وموضوعاتها.
فمنذ مطلع القرن الثالث الهجري وعلى إمتداد قرون تالية له، نهدت طائفة من العلماء للحديث عن هذه الدارات ورَصْدها وتعريفها ووضع المصنفات الخاصة بها وإستحضار ما قيل فيها من الشعر أو ذكرت فيه، وما جرى فيها من أحداث ارتبط بعضها بأفراد منهم، كدارة جلجل التي اقترن اسمها باسم امرئ القيس الشاعر فلا يُذكر اسمها إلا ويتهادى معه قوى امرئ القيس: "ألا رب يوم لك منهن صالح.. ولا سيما يوم بدارة جلجل"...
وحتى صار "يوم دارة جلجل" مضرب المثل عندهم، فكانوا يقولون: هذا يوم ولا كيوم دارة جلجل، وارتبط بعضها الآخر بالقبيلة مجتمعة كدارة خوّ ودارة مأسل ودارة الغمير ودارة عسعس وغيرها مما وقعت فيه أحداث جسام ومعارك طاحنة عُدّت فيما بعد من أيام العرب المشهورة التي يؤرّخ بها وتذكر في تاريخهم.
