قال الحافظ ابن كثير: الشيخ شهاب الدين السهروردي صاحب "عوارف المعارف" شيخ الصوفية ببغداد، كان من كبار الصالحين وسادات المسلمين". وهو شيخ وقته في علم الحقيقة وطريقة التصوف وإليه انتهت الرئاسة في تربية المريدين، وتسليك طريق العبادة والزهد في الدنيا... ومن أنفع ما كتب في هذا الباب كان كتابه الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي يجمع فيه ثلاثة وستين باباً في علوم الصوفية وأحوالهم ومقاماتهم وآدابهم وأخلاقهم وغرائب مواجيدهم، وحقائق معرفتهم وتوحيدهم ودقيق إشاراتهم ولطيف اصطلاحاتهم، وذلك ليذب عن هذه العصابة الارتياب، ببيان وجه الصواب فيما اعتمدوه، وصريح العلم فيما اعتقدوه، كما واحتوى الكتاب على فوائد جليلة في الحديث والتفسير والفقه والسلوك وغير ذلك، وقد اتصف المؤلف بالنزاهة العلمية والإنصاف، فإنه يعطي أهل كل فن حقهم فنراه مثلاً مدح الصوفية وبين منهجهم ومقامهم كما أنه أثنى ثناءً حسناً على كل من علماء التفسير والحديث.
أما منهجه في الكتاب فيتجلى باعتماده أسلوباً رائعاً في شرح الأبواب وذكر أدلتها، فيذكر أولاً حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بإسناده، وهذه فائدة عظيمة وجليلة، كما يروي أقوال الصحابة والتابعين من بعدهم بإسناده.
يعدّ هذا الكتاب من أهم وأنفس الكتب التراثية التي اعتنت بجانب الإحسان اعتناءً بالغاً ليجعل النفس البشرية صافية من الشوائب ونقية من الدخل الذي يؤدي بها إلى الدمار والتدمير. هذا وقد جاءت هذه النسخة محققة وتجلى عمل المحقق بـ: مقابلة المنسوخ مع المخطوط، ترقيم الأحاديث، إثباة نصب العوارف كاملاً، تدوين ترجمة مختصرة للمؤلف (السهروردي)، تدوين وتحقيق النسخة المختصرة لكتاب غنية العارف للشيخ "الحسن الغماري" والذي عني فيه المصنف بتخريج كتاب "عوارف المعارف".
