تجاهلت حركة النهضة العربية، أوائل هذا القرن، التدقيق والبحث الجاد في تاريخ المنطقة العربية إبان الحكم العثماني وذلك لإعتبارات عدة... منها المغالاة في الدعوة القومية... إفتراض العهد العثماني عهد تخلف عام لا يستحق التأمل العميق، وكون الدولة العثمانية تمثل عصبية غير عربية كما الدولة الأموية أو العباسية مثلاً.
هذا التجاهل كاد أن يؤدي لبتر تلك الحقبة الهامة من تاريخنا وزجها في دهاليز النسيان، لولا إنتباه البعض، في الآونة الأخيرة، لأهمية نشر وتحقيق المخطوطات والوثائق المتعلقة بتلك الحقبة، والموزعة هنا وهناك في مكتبات البيوت والأديرة ومتاحف أوروبا.
إن إعادة نشرنا لهذا الكتاب الهام، "مصطفى بربر آغا، حاكم طرابلس واللاذقية، لمؤلفه الأب اغناطيوس طنوس الخوري"، تدخل ضمن هذا السياق.
اعتمد المؤلف على البحث والتدقيق في المخطوطات والوثائق والبيورلديات، وقد عانى مشقة مضنية، للوصول إلى كشف ما التبس من الحوادث التي مرت بحياة مصطفى آغا بربر، على أنه آثر إبداء رأيه في بعضها (ذلك الذي تضاربت فيه الأخبار) تاركاً للقارئ حرية القبول أو الرفض أو الإختيار وجاهداً ما استطاع مواكبة البحث المجرد.
كما أنه اعتمد أسلوب السيرة، فأرخ الأحداث منذ ظهور بطله على ساحة الصراع، وحتى وفاته، على أن تاريخ الأشخاص والشخصيات في بلادنا، وخاصة في العهد العثماني، يتأثر بشكل أولي بالخصائص الفردية والإنتماء العائلي ثم المذهبي والعرقي.
