إن أثر الأدب المهجري، نثراً وشعراً، في أدبنا الحديث وأدبائه، ما يزال حياً، وما يزال أدبهم مطلوباً، لأن الحاجة إليه، فيما يبدو، ما تزال قائمة. والقيم الفنية أو الروحية أو الإنسانية العامة التي طالعونا بها ما تزال نافعة. ولعلها أيضاً، فيما نعاني اليوم من تمزق، في عالم يهجس بالعدل والسكينة والسلام، ضرورية. ثم إن ما دونه الدكتور عبد الكريم الأشتر عنهم وما تلقاه منهم يضيء كثيراً من الحقائق في حياتهم أو في نتاجهم، فيعين على تعميق الفهم للحركة المهجرية التي لا بست حياتنا يوماً، ورمت في بركتها حجراً ضخماً لا تزال مياهها، إلى اليوم، تفور من حولها.
فمن حيث الصدى العميق لهذه الحركة، في حياتنا ونتاجنا الأدبي، ومن انفعال أجيالنا بها، كتاباً ومتلقين، لعمق صلتها بالحياة والإنسان، وصدق كلمتها، وتجديد أكسيتها، وتحرير لغتها أحياناً كثيرة، من التبعية والاجترار والتقليد، من هذا كله كان حرص الدكتور الأشتر على تتبع آثارها وأخبارها وأحوال مبدعيها، والاحتفال، بما يتلقى من رسائل رجالها وأعلامها، وما يسمع من أسرار مواقفهم وصلاتهم بمن خالطوا من الناس، وصلاتهم ببعضهم بعض، وما تأثروا به من ألوان الثقافات في الوطن والمهجر، وتعرضوا له من صور المعاناة في مراحل غربتهم الطويلة.
وتبقى غاية الباحث الأخيرة من كتابة هذه الأوراق إذن أن يحفظ للحركة المهجرية، عند أبرز من يمثلها، ما تصل إليه اليد من حقائقها، فهذا يعين، على حسن تقويمها، وفهم مواقف أصحابها من الله والإنسان والكون.
