للكتاب في تاريخ الأدب مدارس متعددة, وفي جلها تعتمد التقسيم التاريخي الذي يعين الدارس في تتبع حياة هذا الأدب أو ذاك, من خلال مراحل زمنية محددة, وهذا المنهج المعتمد يعود الى معايير إنسانية غير دقيقة غالباً, وقد اتسعت حلقة التأليف في تاريخ الأدب اتساعاً كبيراً, وانتقات الى كتاباتنا عن الأدب العربي في بدايات القرن العشرين, وقد تم تقسيم الأدب العربي الى عصور متعددة: العصر الجاهلي ويغطي مرحلة ما قبل الإسلام وحتى ظهور الإسلام, العصر الإسلامي ويغطي مرحلة ظهور الإسلام, العصر الأموي, العصر العباسي وهو أطول العصور الأدبية والسياسية, العصر المملوكي وهو الذي قامت فيه دولة المماليك, العصر العثماني وهو الذي يبدأ من تأسيس الدولة العثمانية, العصر الحديث وهو الذي يمتد من بداية النهضة العربية الحديثة وحتى الوقت الحاضر, وتعتبر من أهم أهداف الكتاب ربط الطالب والباحث بتاريخه القديم بأقصر السبل وأكثرها سلاسة.

عبد الكريم الأشتر واحد من أعلام النقد والتحقيق في سورية والعالم العربي, ولد في حلب عام 1929, نشر أهم كتب التراث العربي وهو من أكثر الباحثين إسهاماً في النقد الحديث, وهو من أماط اللثام عن عدد من جوانب الأدب العربي في المهجر.
