يبحث هذا الكتاب المهم في واحدة من أهم قضايا النقد العربي القديم التي لم تبحث عميقاً داخل فضاء الرؤية النقدية والمنهج النقدي. والشاهد الشعري العربي في مسيرته النقدية الطويلة كان دائماً شاهداً مفرداً كرس وحدة البيت الشعري، وضيق هذا التكريس الرؤية النقدية كثيراً من خلال التشديد المنقطع على هذه الوحدات ذات الطبيعة التجزيئية، وعلى الرغم من خصب العمل النقدي على الشاهد في مدونه الشعري العربي القديم كما يرى المؤلف، الا ان ظاهرة تكرار الشاهد وارتباطه بالقاعدة النقدية داخل التصور الذهني المسبق حال دون وصول الظاهرة الى قيم نظرية ذات كفاءة نقدية عالية، إذ ظل العمل النقدي على هذه الظاهرة تمثيلاً للنقد المدرسي في التعامل مع الشاهد بعيداً عن الحاضنة بالجمالية.
لقد تم الكشف من خلال أطروحة هذا الكتاب النقدية عن طبيعة تقانات الناقد العربي القديم التي تخلط بين الفنية والأخلاقية، وهو ما لم يتمكن من الاندراج في سياق القدرة الأكاديمية المنتجة ذات الوعي والرصانة والكفاءة للوصول الى ضفاف النظرية، إذ كان الشاهد الشعري باستمرار دليلاً على قوة الشاعر واعتماده وحسمه نقدياً، وأفرز ذلك ظاهرة الشهر المحدث من خلال قضية الشاهد الشعري وإشكاليته في تبني موضوعة الصراع بين القديم والمحدث في النقد العربي القديم، وعلى الرغم من أهمية وخطورة هذه الموضوعة إلا أنها لم تنته الى التعبير عن نفسها في إنتاج نظرية نقدية.
