تدور أحداث الرواية في مطعم شهير في العاصمة العراقية بغداد، والرواي هي الكأس الموضوعة على إحدى الطاولات، يتوافد إليها الزبائن على شكل وجبات متباعدة على عدد ساعات العمل من السابعة صباحا الى الى منتصف الليل، تبدأ الكأس برواية كل ما ترى وتسمع من حوارات وتصرفات وتصل الى ستة وخمسين شخصية هي توجهات الناس بشكل عام، طلبة وعمال وسياسيون وموظفون فاسدون واطباء وعوائل صالحة واخرى متخاصمة.. وهكذا..
خارج المطعم تحدث جريمة قتل للمرضة سعاد قبل ليلة من الاحداث، ينصرف جزء من احاديث المائدة للبحث في حيثيات هذه الجريمة، يدلي كل فريق بدلوه، والكأس تشعر وتنفعل وتفكر وتروي لنا..
الرواية تعرض لنا خطوطا عامة لما عليه المجتمع البشري من تناقضات وعلاقات بينية، وهي تتناول الفئات العمرية كافة، من الصغير الى الكبير، ذكورا واناثا، وتسلط الضوء على السلوك العفوي الذي يرافق الناس في موائدهم..
الكأس الراوية ليست ذكرا او انثى، لا صغيرة ولا كبيرة، تتذكر كل شيء، لها مشاعر جياشة، تتفاعل مع محيطها، تفكر وتحلل، تتألم وتفرح، تحب وتكره، هي كائن فريد من نوعه، لا تشبه الرواة المعتادين، مثقفة ولماحة، وصادقة على طول الرواية..وعرضها.
