"تلك الرائحة ما زالت تنبعث مثل فوهة بركان، تطاردني، تنبعث من ريش الوسادة من قبلات زوجي الحميمة... من رائحة جسده الأشبه ما تكون برائحة الصلصال... ومعها أشعر أن كياني وروحي هي جذوة تتوقد ثم تصير إلى رماد... قطرات ماء تنز أسمع صوتها... تتغلغل إلى طيات الطين الممتد أمام بيتنا في حقل الزيتون والتين المعرى وأوراق الشجر الخريفية، التي غطت مساحات شاسعة أمام البيت حتى بات مثل كوخ قديم مهجور وسط الغاب... وحين تتعشقني الرائحة أشعر أن ذاتي تحلل وأن جلدي يصير رقيقاً تظهر منه أحشائي وقلبي... وعظامي... فأرى بوضوح سجن الصلصال الذي تسكنه روحي، وتهتز شجرة التين العملاقة في أعماقي مُعريّة أوراقها مآخذ بالنحيب وبالبكاء... منذ زمن لم يقترب مني زوجي... ولم أعد صهوة الفرس التي يمتطيها عابراً بها جبال الله الكونية، الموضوعية من جليد... موشكاً التعلق بعنان السماء فيصطدم بجدار من الصلصال ليتناثر هشاهشة على سرير الأبنوس، فأغرق في البكاء. وصوت الريح في الخارج تحيط كمحاق بالبيت المنسي الذي هو بيتنا، والذي هو في حقل واسع بأطراف المدينة حيث السكينة وحيث مقام الجد الأعظم الجاثم على تلة، وكنا نلمح النار تتقد منها، ليلاً وفي النهار، مزق ورايات كأنها قمصان طفل حديث الولادة تنشرها امرأة شبقة".
مجموعة قصصية اجتماعية تحتوي على 13 قصة وقد سميت بهذا الاسم نسبة لآخر قصة فيها (مسكن الصلصال).
