يعتبر هملت أقوى أبطال شكسبير حاسة، يشعر بالحالة غير الطبيعية منذ البداية، عندما نراه في بادئ الأمر، نجد أنه استدعي من "ويتبزرغ" حيث كان يتلقى علومه على أثر وفاة أبيه وزواج والدته من عمه كلوديوس. يعرب عن اشمئزازه من هذا الزواج غير المناسب. تلعب سخريته اللاذعة على الوضع كالبرق المار. غير أنه يمضي باشمئزاز لبعد ما يستطيع إدراكه، وأبعد مما يدركه عقله.
لكن إدراك هملت كان أشد عمقاً. فقد أتت به قرائن من المشاعر الخفية ذات تعاطف خيالي. حتى قبل أن يعلم بظهور شبح والده للجنود الذين كانوا يقومون بالحراسة-كلن يتنابه عارض من عدم الارتياح عن الحالة العامة-فقد أصيب باليأس ورغب في الموت وأخذ يتوق للتخلص من "لحمة الصلب جداً". بعد لقائه الأول مع شبح والده الذي يطلعه على جريمة عمه كلوديوس ويحثه على الانتقام، يرى دون أي شك أن القدر قد زرعه وسط نسيج من الشر، وإن حياته بالذات قد وقعت في الشرك.
يدرك أن الوقت كان غير مناسب: كونه ابن ملك والوريث للعرش، ويعلم أيضا أنه "قد ولد ليعيد الأمور إلى نصابها"، مهما كان ثائراً من القلب ضد هذا المصير الملكي، لم يكن لديه أي اختيار، كما في المسرحيات الإنكليزية، لم تكن الملكية عملاً يسير كما يشاء المرء، بل مصير يضعه الرجل جانباً، إما للنصر أو للكارثة، ولا يمكن رفضه. وبين طيات هذا الكتاب نص هذه المسرحية كاملاً، هذا إلى جانب دراسة تحليلية دونها معد الكتاب عن المسرحية.
