لقد أدرك أئمة العربية أهمية علم التصريف، فأولَوه عنايتهم إلى درجة أنهم فصلوه بالتأليف عن علم النحو؛ حيث بحثوا في هذا العلم عن الكلمات العربية في ذاتها وجوهرها، وما قد يكون طرأ عليها من تغييرات لداعي اللفظ، أو داعي المعنى. وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في تصريف الأسماء خاصة؛ ليركز الطالب عليها، وأكثر فيه مؤلفه من الأمثلة والشواهد؛ ليتمرن الطالب على القياس عليها، مع التزام المؤلف عزو الأقوال ذات الأثر لأربابها، واستئناسه بالمباحث الصرفية في ألفية ابن مالك الشهيرة؛ لأجل تركيز المعلومات في ذهن طالب العربية من جهة، ويُريحه من عناء الغوص في شروحها المطوّلة وحواشيها المعمّقة من جهة ثانية. وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في مقدمة وخاتمة جاءت بينهما خمسة أبواب في تقسيمات الأسماء باعتبارات مختلفة.
