كثيراً ما يشعر المتعلم بصعوبة مادة التاريخ، ومما يزيد من حدة هذا الشعور أن هناك نسبة كبيرة من المدرسين تؤمن بذلك وهو الأمر الذي كثيراً ما ينعكس على مفاهيم الطلبة واتجاهاتهم والواقع هو أن معظم ما يشعر به المتعلمون من صعوبات في أثناء دراسة هذه المادة إنما يرجع إلى طبيعة الأسلوب أو الأساليب التي تستخدم في تدريسها.
وقد كانت نقطة البداية في هذا الأمر هي العمل على تحليل عملية التدريس ذاتها والتي كانت تستهدف بناء وتنمية نواحي معرفية عديدة اشتملت عليها أهداف المناهج الدراسية.
فقد شعر الباحث بأن هناك حاجة ماسة إلى التعرف على مدى تحقيق تلك الأهداف إذا ماس استخدم أكثر من طريقة في تدريس التاريخ إلى جانب الطريقة التقليدية المستخدمة في تدريس تلك المادة.
شمل موضوع البحث ثلاثة فصول تناول الفصل الأول الأسس والأساليب المتبعة في التدريس الجيد، بالإضافة إلى التطرق للهدف العام من تدريس مادة التاريخ والإشارة إلى مداخل التدريس تلك المادة والتعريف بطريقة التدريس. أما ما يخص الفصل الثاني فإنه تناول الطرق الرئيسة في تدريس التاريخ مبيناً محاسن ومساوئ كل طريقة على حدة. أما الفصل الأخير من هذا الموضوع فقد أوضح أهمية الوسائل التعليمية وأنواعها بالنسبة لتدريس التاريخ وتناول الشق الثاني من هذا الفصل عملية تقويم تدريس التاريخ وذلك عن طريق دراسة نوعين من الاختبارات التي تنتج عن عملية التدريس وهما: الاختبارات المقالية والاختبارات الموضوعية.
