السمة البارزة التي تميز سياحة العصر هي التكيف السريع مع حاجات ودوافع السائح .. فبعد أن كان النشاط السياحي حصراً على فئة واحدة أو فئتين من الناس منذ وقت غير بعيد، كالذاهبين لقضاء العمل أو الحج إلى الأماكن المقدسة، أصبح هذا النشاط ذا طابع شعبي تمارسه فئات متنوعة من ذوي الدخول المتوسطة والمحدودة. ومن الطبيعي أن يقترن هذا التحول في الطلب بتحولات أخرى في مجال الخدمة التي تلبي رغبة السائح، ومن هذه التحولات الملحوظة سياحة الحلو المألوف ويستمتع بالطبيعة البكر لبضعة أيام، يمارس فيها نشاطات ثقافية ورياضية واجتماعية ضمن برامج معدة سلفاً يستشعر معها بفوائد التعاون والمسؤولية تجاه مجتمعه. ومن الطبيعي كذلك أن ينفق الزائر قدراً من التكاليف على هذا النوع من النشاط وأن يسافر كثير مع السياح في رحلات اجمالية بطريق الجو للتخيم في بلاد بعيدة. وسنرى عما قريب رواجاً واسعاً لسياحة المخيمات في العالم لكونها نمطاً جديداً يقبل عليه السائح لنيل قسطاً من المتعة التي ينشدها، وقضاء وقت فراغه على النحو الذي يريد. وقد أخدت أكثر دول العالم على عاتقها تنشيط هذا النوع من السياحة بالقدر الذي أصبح يضاهي أنواع السياحة ومهماتها الأخرى، لا بل زادت في بناء وإنشاط المجتمعات السياحية خصوصاً قرب المطارات أو الحدائق العامة أو الغابات وقامت بتزويدها بالتقنيات الحديثة وفتح الشوارع فيها وتعبيدها وإنشاء مطاعم صغيرة أو كافتيريا لتقديم الخدمات للسائحين، كذلك حاولت بعض الدول تزويد هذه المخيمات بالمرشدين السياحيين لارشاد السياح عن المناطق السياحية الأخرى وتزويدهم بكتب سياحية أو كتب الدليل السياحي وإقامة المهرجانات الموسيقية والاحتفالية.
