كُتب الكثير عن (الشنفري) وعن سيرته، وفروسيته وشاعريته، وبيئته ومواقفه، ولاميته وصعلكته بشكل يكاد لا ينتهي أو يقف بين الباحثين والدارسين لهذا الشاعر الكبير. وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم الدكتور عمر بن غرامة العمروي للـ (الشنفري الحَجري .. قراءة جديدةً في أخباره وشعره" فجاء ديوانه في حُلةٍ جديدةٍ فيها من التحقيق والتوثيق ما يستحق الثناء. وقد استمد مادته من التاريخ المروي في المصادر التي تناقلتها الأجيال جيلاً بعد جيل، الأمر الذي يكشف لنا ما تبقى من مآثر الشنفري مما لم يسجله أحد ممن اشتغلوا بديوانه، أو لم يذكره هو في شعره، أو يسجله غيره في المصادر.
وفي هذا الإطار قسّم المؤلف كتابه إلى بابين، أولهما يتضمن سيرته وأخباره، وما ورد عنه في "كتب الأوائل والأواخر" ، وثانيهما يختص بديوانه، وفيه جمع المؤلف شعر الشنفري من جميع المصادر المخطوطة مع الإشارة إليها في متن الكتاب، وأجاد صُنعاً بأن رتب هذا الديوان على أحرف الهجاء، مع بيان غريبه بالقدر الذي يحتاج إليه الناظر أما قصيدة اللامية فقد ذكرها كما كتبها مؤرج السدوسي (توفي سنة 195ه)، بحيث جاء كل بيت وشرحه يتبعه، وعند إثبات اللامية في هذا الديوان، يذكر المؤلف شروح العلماء الأوائل لها، وما قاله الباحثون الأواخر، ومبيّناً أسباب الخلاف الواقع في نسبتها إلى الشنفري عبر العصور.
