هذا الكتاب في أصله أطروحة قدمت لنيل درجة الدكتوراه في التاريخ، ومن المعروف أن ثمة دراسات عديدة كتبت عن دولة المرابطين وإنجازاتها العظيمة في العدوتين المغرب والأندلس. لكن خلفيات هذه الدولة وبنيانها التحتية والمراحل التي قطعتها في الصحراء قبل أن تبلغ درجة النضج السياسي والتفوق العسكري ظلت. قبل أن تقدم هذه الأطروحة – غامضة ضبابية، لا تعدو قصة حج يحيى الكدالي ومجاهدة عبد الله بن ياسين. تتبع المؤلف، بعد تقديم مركز لجغرافية الصحراء وتاريخها القديم. أخبار قبائل صنهاجة الكبرى، وهجراتها قبل الإسلام من بلاد المغرب إلى الصحراء أما زحف الرومان وعسفهم، وإستقرار معظمهم في صحراء الملثمين حيث قوي نفوذها وعظمت مكانتها. الأمر الذي أهّلها للتكتل وإقامة دولة صنهاجة الأولى في منتصف القرن الثاني 8م عاصمتها أودغست بقيادة ملوكها الكبار: تلاكاكين وإبنه تيلوتان وأحفاده. تمكن المؤلف من دراسة هذه الفترة الغامضة السابقة لقيام دولة المرابطين بفضل المادة البيبليوغرافية الغزيرة التي حصل عليها والطريقة الفعالة التي سلكها في إستنطاق النصوص والتعامل معها بحذر وأناة، وكل ذلك يجعل من هذا الكتاب الثري الموثق مصدراً يفيد منه الدارسون والباحثون في تاريخ الصحراء والسودان الغربي في العصر الوسيط وعلاقاتهما بالمغرب العربي، وبخاصة المغرب الأقصى، كما يجد فيه عموم القراء وهواة تاريخ هذه المنطقة متعة وفائدة محققة.
