انطلق الشعر العربي خلال السنوات الاربعين الماضية الى رحاب العصر الحديث مبتعداً عن التقليدية والرومانسية, ولم يعد ذلك الكائن الوطني الموالي وازداد انفتاحه على التأثيرات الاجنبية والتيارات الادبية المعاصرة. فقد مر بحركة متسارعة مشابهة للتطورات الأدبية الغربية التي كانت سائدة في القرن العشرينات والثلاثينات من القرن الماضي. بيد أنه احتفظ بشخصيته المميزة وهمومه الخاصة مانحاً مجالاً أكثر رحابة للتعبير بأشكال حديثة متطورة. ولعل بدر شاكر السياب ونازك الملائكة وخليل حاوي هم الطليعة التي جعلت هيمنة الاسلوب الرفيع للقصيدة عرضة للتغيير فأخضعوا وزنها التقليدي للتجربة جنباً الى جنب مع شعر التفعيلة وحرروها من القوالب الجامدة وذلك في أربعينيات القرن المنصرم. كانت المرحلة التالية من العصرنة مؤلمة ومثيرة في آن معاً. فالأزمات الاجتماعية والسياسية والاشكالات المتعلقة بالنظرية الأدبية أفسحت المجال للسجالات وسط العديد من المدارس والافراد الموهوبين الذين أسهموا رفد قضية الحداثة التي ما تزال مثار الجدل. وهذا الكتاب يسلط الضوء على كل ذلك من خلال مقدمة تبحث في لمحة عن أدب الحقبة المعاصرة, الشعر الحر- شعر التفعيلة، الشعراء التموزيون، القصيدة السياسية وحركة المقاومة. ويبحث في جزئه الثاني مقتطفات من الشعر العربي الحديث مع ترجمات ذاتية الشعراء.
ولد جون ميخائيل في قرية عيتانيت اللبنانية عام 1945. فقد بصره في الرابعة عشر من عمره بعد تعرضه لانفجار قنبلة في الحرب الاهلية اللبنانية. سافر الى كندا في الثانية والعشرين من عمرة ودرس هناك اللغة الانجليزية.
