إن مؤلف كتاب "أخبار الأوليا ومناقبهم" هو الإمام العالم صفي الدين أبو عبد الله الحسين بن الإمام العالم العلامة الصاحب جمال الدين أبي الحسن علي بن الشيخ الإمام العالم العلامة مُفتي الفِرق كمال الدين أبي المنصور ظافر بن الحسين الأزدي الأنصاري الخزرجي فقد كان إستجابة لولده إبراهيم، بعدما وصل عمر صفي الدين مؤلف هذا الكتاب أربعاً وثمانين سنة.
والكتاب جاء نتيجة خبرة طويلة وغنية سيما، وأنَّ المؤلف بلغ من العمر عتياً، والملاحظ أن الكتاب جمع فيه أخبار الأولياء الذين رأى في تراجمهم ما وجد هوى في نفسه من حيث سلوكهم ومن حيث مسيرة حياتهم العلمية.
وقد جاء الكتاب في معظمه ليعطي أخبار الأولياء الذين التقى بهم المؤلف أو الذين كان هواهم مطابق لهواه، وذكر شيئاً من أخبار معجزاتهم، وما حدث معهم من خوارق...
إن الكتاب يلقي الضوء على العديد من الأولياء الذين ترجمت لهم كتب التراجم أو الذين لم تترجم لهم، وجاء نتيجة خبرة شخصية وتناولهم من جوانب تخص الصوفية، وقد لا تخص العلم، والجهود العلمية.
