يحاول الكاتب د.جمعان بن عبد الكريم الكشف عن مسألة هامة ألا وهي "لماذا بقيت المرحلة التي مهدت لنشأة البحث اللساني العربي غامضة، ومحاطة بالظلام، كما يذهب إلى ذلك المستشرق الألماني يروكلمان؟ ولماذا هي كذلك؟ أهي تشبه اللغة الإنسانية الأولى حيث البحث في أمر نشأتها هو بحث غيبي ميتافيزيقي لا سبيل إلى الوصول فيه إلى دليل قاطع حاسم، أم "أن نشأة البحث اللساني العربي قضية تاريخية فكرية خاضعة للدرس والتمحيص... ثم هل أثر فكر الأوليات في الخطاب العلمي اللساني العربي؟ أم أن ذلك الفكر استنفد غرضه بروز النشأة، ولم يمتد بامتداد النحو والدراسات اللسانية الأخرى؟
سيتعرض الكاتب في بحثه هذا مجمل آراء القدماء، ثم بعد ذلك يحمل آراء المحدثين، ثم محاولة لكشف جوانب من غموض بدايات البحث اللساني العربي، وإزاحة اللثان عن الأسباب الحقيقية لذلك الغموض، يلي ذلك محاولة ابستمولوجية لدراسة ما نتج عن فكر البدايات من آثار في الخطار العلمي للدرس اللساني.
ينتقد الباحث في كتابه هذا الإطار السلفاني الذي شمل حتى المفكرين المتنورين وكثيراً من المفكرين المتأثرين بالدراسات الحديثة، فانتهى الأمر إلى سلطانية لا إبداع فيها تردد صدى مقولات وأفكار ونظريات علماء الغرب المتقدم لا يقوم الاجتهاد النظري فيها إلا في القراءة والتأويل، فيبقى في إطار تبعي ويعمل كعنصر من تبعية أعمق وأشمل لذلك يحث الكاتب هنا إلى إجراء نقاش أولي حول إدرام المشكلة وأن تهدف هذه الدراسة إضافة إلى دراسات أخرى في كشف الإشكالات المعقدة لمشكلاتنا الحضارية والمعرفية بالاعتماد على المناهج الحديثة لتحليل الخطاب والانتقال إلى أفق معرفي يؤمن إمكانية الحوار، وإمكانية القبول، وإمكانية التنافس، عندئذ فقط يمكن أن تكون هناك مناهج أخرى، وابستمولوجيا أخرى، وخطابات أخرى، وعالم معرفي آخر.
