حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في سوسيولوجيا التعليم من جامعة السوربون -فرنسا في 1977.
يعمل حاليا مستشارا للتعليم العالي لليونيسكو في بيروت.
له مؤلفات وأبحاث عديدة في حقل التعليم.

احتلّ موضوع لا تكافؤ الفرص الدراسية حيزاً مرموقاً في الأدبيات التربوية في الستينات والسبعينات ودرست أوّاليْاته، وقدمت له تفسيرات متعددة، وكان لعلم اجتماع التربية الدور الأكبر في تحويله إلى قضية نقدية، واستعمل فيه بصورة خاصة تعبير الاصطفاء المدرسي، فعلم الاجتماع الذي حفل في هذا الموضوع قضية مطروحة بقوة على الصعيد العالمي، معطياً إياها بعداً اجتماعياً خالصاً يطغى على البعدين النفسي والإداري، ومبيناً الشرعية الاجتماعية التي يعطيها الطرح النفسوي لعدم تكافؤ الفرص، ونسبية الطرح التكنوقراطي.
ولن تتبدى هذه الخلاصة حول المغازي الاجتماعية للطرحين المذكورين إلا بعد استعراض مقولات علم الاجتماع وبيناته حول هذا الموضوع. إنها مقولات نظرية مستمدة من الأدبيات السوسيولوجية حول البيئة الاجتماعية للدول الرأسمالية، مؤَيَّدةً ببيانات إحصائية مجمّعة من العديد من البلدان، لا سيما تلك التي ازدهر فيها وتطور علم الاجتماع.
ثمة ثلاث مقولات شائعة في هذا الصدد يستعرضها الباحث في الفصل الأول في هذا الكتاب. ولكن دراسته حول لبنان والدول العربية سمحت له بإضافة ثلاثة مقولات أخرى مستندة إلى الأدبيات السوسيولوجية حول البنى الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لدول العالم الثالث وقد استعرض المؤلف هذه المقولات الثلاثة الإضافية في الفصل الثاني.
