هذا الكتاب نفيس ألفه عالم جليل "الإمام النووي" ليكون طريقاً لقارئه إلى الآخرة ومحصلاً لآدابه الباطنة والظاهرة وفيه جمع علوماً شتى من أحاديث الزهد، ورياضات النفوس، وتهذيب الأخلاق، وطهارات القلوب وعلاجها، وصيانة الجوارح وإزالة اعوجاجها. وغيرها كثير جدا.ً ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى العلماء والدارسون بدراسته وتحقيق ما يعرضه من مادة حديثية. ولا يدعي محق هذا الكتاب أنه سيقوم بعمل جديد في هذه النسخة، وإنما يقول بأن عمله سيقتصر فقط على تصحيح الأخطاء الواردة في نسخ الكتاب وأن يظهره بحلة جديدة تشتمل على أمرين أساسيين، الأول: تحقيق أحاديث الكتاب على الكتب التسعة مستعيناً في ذلك بجهاز الحاسوب وذلك ليؤكد على مكان وجود هذه الأحاديث في تلك الكتب. الثاني: شرح الكلمات المبهمة أو الموهمة، مؤكد في أكثر من موقع على المعنى المقصود لبعض العبارات التي لم يقصد ظاهرها. هذا مع أخذه بعين الاعتبار التفسيرات التي قام بها الإمام النووي بعد بعض الأحاديث.
