"هل نجد بالنسبة لنا ما هو أفضل من الالتباس؟ لا يا حبيبي، لم يجبرنا أحد على ترك مصل ولكن الهواء بات خانقاً. مصر لم تعد ذاتها. تركنا ونحن نسير على أقدامنا، بملء إرادتنا، دون طربوش ولا دف. من كان يتصور نهاية لهذه؟ لا لن يحصل لنا شيء لن يحصل ما دام السلطان يحب لافونتين. كان الكونت هنري توثا يردد بين علامتي تعجب باللاتينية قائلاً: نحن لا شيء!.. أما أبي فإنه لخص الموقف بطريقة أدق: "لسنا سوريين ولا مصريين، نحن روم كاثوليك"."
بين الواقع والخيال تدور أحداث رواية الطربوش ليجسد روبير سوليه من خلالها حكاية الانتماء الضائع، المشهد الأول في هذه الأحداث يتحرك عن شخصية ميشال بطركاني الذاهب إلى مدرسته والواقف أمام السلطان في المدرسة اليسوعية يلقي بانفعال بالغ قصيدة الشاعر الفرنسي جان لافونتين، هذه الحادثة تستأثر بمشاعر التلميذ في حينها لتظل هذه الحادثة بظلالها اللطيفة مأثرة في نفس شارل وتصوراته حتى في أحلك الأزمات والتي لاحت في نهاية الرواية، وعندما أصبح وجود هذه العائلة في مصر مهدد لأن ضباط يعتمرون القبعات سيتولون السلطة عما قليل، فتسقط موضة الطربوش، وتحل نهاية عالم، وتكون لـ"سوريي" مصر، بداية مؤلمة لهجرات أخرى. والكاتب "روبير سلويه" المولود في القاهرة عاش في مصر سبعة عشر عاماً. وهو حالياً رئيس تحرير جريدة "لوموند" الفرنسية بعد أن كان مراسلها في روما وواشنطن. وروايته هذه "الطربوش" هي أولى رواياته.
