ينتمي ميشيل بطركاني إلى عائلة شامية مسيحية مشبعة بحب الثقافة الفرنسية، وفي مصر الرائعة المتعددة الثقافات والخاضعة للانتداب البريطاني في ذلك الحين، كان هؤلاء المسيحيون المشرقيون أقلية تتأرجح بين عالمين.
لماذا غامر جورج بطركاني، والد ميشيل، بصنع الطرابيش؟ إن هذه العمرة الذكرية التي يشبهها أعداؤها بأصيص الزهور كانت آنذاك شعاراً وطنياً، كما كانت رمزاً لمجتمع سعيد سوف تؤدي الاضطرابات التي ستحصل خلال ذلك العصر إلى اختفائه.
إنها ساغا عائلية، رواية عن الزمن الماضي في شرق قريب جداً. تستعيد لنا "الطربوش" عالماً من العذوبة والرقة وهو يتنقل ما بين سطيحات فندق هليوبوليس، وشواطئ الإسكندرية، ومروج نادي الخديوي الرياضي، عالماً تعيره شخصيات غريبة الأطوار، مثل ناندو المرابي الشبيه بالفيل، وماغي المثيرة بزمرة عشاقها، ومكرم القبطي الذي أقسم أن يرتدي ثياب الحداد حتى رحيل آخر جندي إنكليزي...
بعد فترة قصيرة، سوف يستولي ضباط يرتدون القبعة العسكرية على السلطة، وترحل موضة الطربوش، سيكون هذا إيذاناً بنهاية عالم وبداية مناف أخرى بالنسبة لسوريي مصر.
