تلقي الهندسة بظلالها على خيال حسن فتحي، فيحلق في سماء الأدب المسرحي مبدعا مسرحيتيه "قصة مشربية" و"قصة يوطوبيا" والكتاب يتداخل فيهما الواقع بالخيال، والهندسة بالفلسفة، والحاضر بالماضي، متجاوزاً بلوحات ومشاهد مسرحيتيه الزمان والمكان. وبشخصياتها المعاصر والغائب منهم في أعماق الزمان، ففي مسرحيته "قصة مشربية" يتتبع الكاتب قصة مشربية منذ كانت مرمية في إحدى زوايا محل لبيع الأثاث العتيق، إلى أن تبوأت مكاناً لها في إحدى المنازل المبنية على الطراز المريح، فالهندسة المسكونة فيه تسللت، في سبيل معرفة جذورها، إلى يوم ميلادها في عمق التاريخ، ليكشف الكاتب من خلال ذلك عن هاجسه الدائم حول الحداثة والتراث في فن العمارة.
وتأخذ مسرحية "قصة يوطوبيا" بعداً رمزياً آخر، ما زالت الهندسة فاعلة في العمل المسرحي ككل، غلا أن حسن فتحي في هذه المسرحية ومن خلال شخصياتها (الرجل والمرأة) الباحثان عن المدينة الفاضلة التي سمعا عنها والتي حاولا ملاحقتها عبر البلاد البيضاء والحمراء والصفراء والزرقاء والخضراء يكشف الكاتب أن كل هذه البلاد تفتقد إلى المادة الشفافة (السعادة) وبالتالي فهي ليست بلاد يوطوبيا. من خلال هذه الانزياحات يمكن القول بأن الكاتب إنما أراد أن يصل إلى نتيجة تنمّ عن فلسفته في موضوع العمارة وهي أن مجرد الفلسفة في هذا الموضوع لا يلتقي بلاد اليوطوبيا، بل يفقدها قبل الوصول بقليل.
