أدت مشكلة تخطيط الحدود بين المغرب والجزائر وما أسفرت عنه من صدامات مسلحة بين الدولتين، كما أدت القضية الموريتانية في عام 1960م وبعدها قضية الصحراء المغربية بعد تحريرها من إسبانيا في عام 1975م، إلى تعثر المسيرة المغاربية. كذلك أدت قضية الصحراء إلى تراجع الدور المغربي في منظمة الوحدة الأفريقية وتالياً في أفريقيا، ربما كان هذا من العاملان السلبيان من الأسباب التي حملت المغرب على التركيز بفعالية أكثر على الركن الأهم الذي يقوم عليه الدور الذي يتطلع إليه، وهو تعميق العلاقات مع المشرق العربي.
وهذا الكتاب "التحولات المشرقية في السياسة المغربية" يحاول أن يلقى الضوء عن قرب على المحاولات المغربية التي جربت طوال عقد من الزمن (1965-1975) وهي المحاولات التي أرست قاعدة التحولات في السياسة المغربية نحو المشرق العربي، باعتباره قلب العالم الإسلامي وعمقه الاستراتيجي. ولأن هذا التحول ليس عملاً سياسياً عادياً. وبالتالي لا يمكن أن يقوم به دبلوماسيون عاديون، فقد عهد به الملك الحسن الثاني، وهو صاحب القرار المغربي، إلى شخصية مغربية تتمتع بمزايا أساسية تمكنها من أداء هذا الدور، وأحمد ابن سودة هو الرجل الذي عهد له القيام بهذا الدور.
لذلك كان لا بد من أن يحاول الكتاب إلقاء الضوء على هذا الرجل، عائلته، دراسته ودوره الوطني نضاله، شخصيته، الأعمال السرية الخاصة التي كلف بها، كما وتطرق الكتاب إلى اللقاءات الأولى بين الملك الحسن وأقطاب منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية. أبو يوسف محمد النجار، وياسر عرفات "الحقيبة الكبيرة"، وإضافة إلى أسرار دور الملك الحسن الثاني في القضية الفلسطينية، يتناول الكتاب وساطة المغرب في الحرب اللبنانية وعلاقاته السورية والعربية.
