هذه خطوةٌ متواضعةٌ على درب الوحدة العربيّة الحقيقيّة، وحدةِ الفكر وأداة التفكير، عَزَمَ إتحاد الأطباء العرب أن يقوم بها، وفاءً بحاجةٍ لوجود مصطلحات طبيّة عربيّة موحّدة تُستَعْمَلُ في المؤسسات العلميّة في سائر الأقطار العربيّة، يكون التعبيرُ بها عن المعاني والأفكار العلميّة سهلاً ميسوراً على أبناء هذه الأمة في كل مكان، ويتمُّ بإستخدامها التفاهمُ العلميُّ على وجهٍ من الدقّة والضبط الذي يلزم لمثل هذه الدراسة.
من أجل ذلك ألّف "إتحاد الأطباء العرب" لجنة لتوحيد المصطلحات الطبيّة، تضمّ صفوةً من المؤمنين بوجوب التوحيد، المتمكٍّنين من المعرفة بالطب واللغة، من الأقطار التي فيها كليّات طبّ وطنيّةٌ راسخة القدم، وعَهِدَ إليها أن تنهض بإعداد معجم موحدّ للمصطلحات الطبيّة، يضمّ من الكَلِم أكثرَها تداوُلاً في التعليم والتأليف والممارسة، وتجتهد فتضع لكلٍ منها واحداً يقابله من أصلح التعابير.
وكانت الأسُس التي جرى عليها العمل في إختيار المصطلحات: "استعملت كلمة عربيّة واحدة مقابل التعبير الأجنبي"، "استُعْمِلت الكلمات العربية المتداولة أو التي سبق أن استعملها الأطباء العرب الأقدمون"، "وإذا كان كثير من المصطلحات العلميّة متعدِّد الأصول فقد كان لِزاماً أن تلجأ اللجنة إلى إختيار معنى واحد من المعاني العديدة"، "استُبْعِدَت الكلمات الداخيلة (الأجنبية المعرَّبة)"، "ثُبِّتت سوابق ولواحق تَمَّ الإلتزام بها وذُكِرَت في أول المعجم"، "فُضِّل الأطِّراد والإنسجام في إستعمال الكلمات والصيغ"، "جرى التصرّف في صيغ النسبة للتمييز أو منع اللَبْس"، "لم تلجأ اللجنة إلى النحت أو التركيب إلا في ما ندر"، "كثيراً ما يُعبَّر عن المفهوم الواحد في اللغات الأجنبية بمصطلحات متعدّدة مُتَرادِفة"، "ضُبطت الكلمات العربية بالشكل ضبطاً كاملاً"، "أضيفَ إلى المعجم عديدٌ من الصُوَر التوضيحيّة، زيادة في الإيضاح، وتثبيتاً للمصطلحات، وتعميماً للفائدة من المعجم".
