الفلسفات الشرقية هي الفلسفات التي أعطتها حضارات الشرق الأدنى القديم (الفرعونية، السومرية، البابلية، الفينيقية، الفارسية...) وأمم الهندس والصين واليابان. فالفلسفة خلافاً لما كان يعتقده بعض المفكرين، ليست بنت اليونان، أو نتاج أوروبي خالص. فالاكتشافات التي ظهرت حديثاً تبين جانباً ملحوظاً من الحضارات الشرقية، وتدفعنا إلى الاعتراف بوجود فلسفات أولية في الفكر الشرقي القديم. وتعتبر هذه الفلسفات، من الناحية التاريخية، المرحلة الأولى في المسار الفلسفي. لأن الفلسفة الغربية التي نبعت في بلاد اليونان وتضافرت على تكوينها وتطويرها حضارات متعددة، لم تنشأ في فراغ، إذ لا يوجد فكر فلسفي خالص. فالحضارات الشرقية، من خلال الصلات الواسعة والمختلفة ببلاد الإغريق نفحت الروح اليونانية العلوم الطبيعية والآراء الفلسفية. وتتضمن هذه الآراء من حيث الأهمية، بذور جميع اتجاهات الفكر في العالم الراهن، سواء كان هذا الفكر الديني لاهوتي وفلسفي مثالي، ومادي لذلك يجب أن تبدأ كتابة تاريخ الفلسفة بالشرق. لأن هذه الكتابة سوف تساعدنا على فهم التراث الفلسفي المتراكم الحي الفاعل، وعلى إدراك الفكر في تجلياته ووعيه بذاته. في هذا الإطار جاءت الدراسة التي بين أيدينا والتي تتناول بالدراسة الفلسفات الشرقية موضوعاتها، أعلامها، مدارسها. في القسم الأول من الكتاب تم تناول الفلسفة المصرية القديمة وبعض موضوعاتها، والفلسفة في بلاد ما بين النهرين وأبرز تجلياتها. أما في القسم الثاني فتم تقديم مدخل عام عن قضايا الفلسفة في الصين وأعلامها. وعن الفلسفة الهندية مدارسها.
