يمثل هذا الكتاب الجزء الأول من فلسفة القيم: إشكاليات وأعلام، وفي الوقت نفسه، يأتي بعد كتابين آخرين في موضوع القيم، الأول، كان بعنوان، فلسفة القيم: مفهومها وطبيعتها، والثاني: تصنيف القيم بين الدين والفلسفة.
مما يجعل أهميته بالغة، فهو نتيجة لعمل كبير، بما يمتاز به من شمولية وخصوصية، فمن حيث الشمولية، نجده يكشف عن أهم أعلام القيم في الفلسفة الشرقية، كما يجمع أعلام القيم من مختلف التيارات الفكرية والفلسفية، بل وحتى ذات الخلفية الدينية.
وإذا أردنا الدقة، فهو يبدأ بالحديث عن مفهوم القيم ومشكلاتها، ثم ينتقل إلى الحديث عن القيم في مصر القديمة، مرورا بعدة فلاسفة شرقيين. وبالتالي فهو يغطى فترة زمانية في غاية الاهمية والخطورة. أما من حيث خصوصية هذا العمل، فهو العمل الأول ـ في تاريخ الفلسفة كما نرى ـ الذي يثير مختلف قضايا القيم بتجرد وموضوعية، وفي الوقت نفسه يطرح قضايا ظلت في أحيان كثيرة من الطابوهات، رغم أهميتها. زيادة على كون هذه الدراسة تحاول أن تؤسس لنظرية فلسفية جديدة، تتحرر من فكرة المركزية الغربية، دون أن تقع في براثن الشوفينية والنرجسية، وهذا ما جعلنا نعمل على اختيار عينات واضحة لفلاسفة وفلسفات شكلت فلسفة القيم جانبا مهما من اهتماماتها.
ولتحقيق هذه الغاية، سعينا إلى البحث في إشكالية، تنقسم إلى شقين، الأولى نحصر فيها أهم من اهتم بفلسفة القيم من الاعلام، والثانية تتعلق بأهم الاشكاليات القيمية التي عالجها هؤلاء، مع الاقرار مسبقا بصعوبة هذه المهمة، خاصة بعد ما ألزمنا أنفسنا بمنهج دقيق، فكانت خطوات بحثنا مقسمة على خمسة فصول، زيادة على مقدمة وخاتمة، وقائمة للمصادر والمراجع، وبطبيعة الحال فهرس للموضوعات.
