يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته كتابين اثنين: يمتاز الأول بأنه يكشف النقاب عن الوضع الحقيقي للبحر السادس عشر ويثبت زيف الأسطورة القائلة بنسبته الى الأخفش, كما يقد م لأول مرة الاسم الحقيقي لهذا البحر وهو( القريب). أما الكتاب الثاني فيقدم تعريفات جديدة لبعض مصطلحات علم القافية مثل( السناد). ويحتوي الكتاب على دراسة جديدة في عروض الخليل في ضوء كتاب العروض لأبي الحسن أحمد بن محمد العروضي, وفي هذه الطبعة ضبط كامل للنص بالشكل, وكتابته بما يوافق قواعد الكتاب العربية المعاصرة, كما تم ترقيم أوراق المخطوط ووضعها بين معقوفتين, أما التعليق الفيلولوجي الذي وضع في الهامش فهو يتضمن: نسبة الشواهد, نقد الأعمال ذات الصلة بالإستعانة بأمهات المعاجم العربية, كما تمت مقارنة هذا العمل بالأعمال الأخرى ولا سيما الأخفش والتنوخي.
