هو العلامة علاء الدين ابن النفيس القرشي الدمشقي المصري. عاش في الحقبة الأخيرة من العصر العباسي، وعاصر دولة السلاجقة والدولة الأيوبية، والمماليك البحرية.
درس الطب في البيمارستان النوري في دمشق ودرس فيه قبل أن ينتدبه السلطان الصالح لرئاسة البيمارستان المنصوري في القاهرة.
كان ابن النفسي عالماً فذاً وفقيهاً شافعياً مرموقاً، وكان طبيباً عبقرياً في تصانيفه وشروحه واكتشافاته. شرح فصول أبقراط وقانون أبن سينا، وتصانيفه شتى في أبواب المعرفة المختلفة وفي مقدمها الطب.
لم يكن في عصره، بإجماع الآراء من يضاهيه في الطبابة والعلاج والعلم. اعترف له المستشرقون بعبقريته في الطب إذ سبق سرفيتوس بثلاثة قرون في اكتشاف الدورة الدموية الصغرى، واعتبره شاخت إماماً لهارفي الطبيب البريطاني مكتشف الدورة الدموية الكبرى.
